Editor-in-Chief Maddy Myers grew up in a time period when playable female characters were rare, and video game marketing was explicitly geared toward a male audience. In her early work as a video game critic and journalist at the Boston Phoenix, she pushed back against this dominant narrative, and over the course of her career, she got to watch it change. But also, after Gamergate in 2014, she watched her peers, especially other marginalized people, leave games journalism because of the harassment they faced. She stuck around, going on to work at The Mary Sue, Kotaku, and Polygon; currently, she co-hosts the video game podcast Triple Click with Jason Schreier and Kirk Hamilton. She always aims to bring more and different voices beyond just her own to the fore, and Mothership is the continuation of that long-held dream.
Managing Editor Zoë Hannah has been writing ever since she first learned her letters as a child. She got her start in journalism at the University of Pittsburgh’s newspaper as a reporter and news editor, while also co-founding the university’s first feminist publication, The Fourth Wave. Since then, she’s held editor and leadership roles at G/O Media, Hearst Magazines, and Polygon. She’s spent years watching the industry’s most powerful executives take massive paychecks while laying off reporters and writers doing imperative work, and she’s observed women, trans and queer folks, and writers of color take the brunt end of the stick every time. While she’s always advocated for marginalized people as a leader and editor, she’s incredibly proud to create a publication that prioritizes amplifying and protecting those voices.
