As Grand Theft Auto 6 approaches its release date on Nov. 19, 2026, what piques my interest isn’t necessarily the game itself, but the societal impact that will inevitably surround it. GTA 6 is one of those games that will impact the gaming industry and wider culture years down the line, since it expands beyond niche gamer circles into the greater public sphere. Already, I’ve seen news of GTA 6 bleeding into an unexpected internet circle, the one of the cis women lifestyle influencers, and they’re all asking a similar question.

Why would you let your boyfriend play GTA 6?

The reason influencers are posing this question is because the game will include a romance mechanic between co-protagonists Lucia and Jason. As you're playing the game, you can choose to strengthen the romantic aspect of their relationship or keep it platonic. To increase the romantic aspect you need to do various things such as: buy the other character gifts, go on dates with them, answer their texts, etc. Even though you can play as Lucia and experience the romance through her eyes, what these lifestyle influencers have latched onto was the idea of their boyfriends, not Jason, romancing Lucia.
